16’ tall walk around Dragon for four dancers

by Christina McCarthy

How do I make a 16 foot tall dragon that breaks into four parts for a full scale ballet production and can be quickly brought onto stage by dancers who were moments ago dancing their other roles?

This project started with investigations I made with cane construction of a horse head for a production of Macbeth at Orlando Shakes in Florida. It was a leap of faith as this was the largest puppet I have ever made and it needed to be able to dance in a way that felt symbiotic with ballet, fluid, graceful and terrifying.

Testing the dragon

The dragon unfortunately did not get its debut at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara on March 17, 2020 as we moved into pandemic lockdown, but here are two test videos of the dragon in the street! We finally got to see the dragon on stage in Santa Barbara March 5 and 6 2022.
